Difference Between Safety Toes in Work Boots

Toe protection is usually one of the first safety features that you will look for in a work boot. There are three main types of safety toes: a steel toe, a composite toe or an alloy toe. All three must pass the same ASTM, ANSI and OSHA safety standards making them all great for toe protection.  However, each one has their own additional features.  Let’s take a look at those individual features to help you figure out the right one for you.

Composite Toe

No metal is used in the making of composite toes; they are made of Kevlar, carbon fiber, plastic or fiberglass.Features of a composite toe:

  • They resist extreme temperatures so the toe won’t heat up or get cold if you work in hot or cold work environments.
  • Composite toes are up to 30% lighter than steel toes.
  • They won’t set off a metal detector. For example, if you work in an airport and need toe protection, a composite toe may be perfect for you.
  • Composite safety toes, even though they pass ASTM minimum compression standards

Steel Toe

Steel toe work boots are generally a little less expensive than other safety toe boots.Features of a steel toe:

  • A toe cap insert is made of heavy duty steel to protect your feet from falling objects.
  • A steel toe offers more shear resistance from chainsaws or grinders for example.
  • Steel toes can withstand the highest weight of compression by strongly exceeding ASTM compression standards.
